The factory-applied protective coating strengthens the surface during the initial period of use by reducing excessive water absorption and staining, provided that contaminants are removed as quickly as possible using water and a neutral cleaning agent. The duration of protection depends on many factors, including the method of use and cleaning. Chemical or physical exposure to external factors may require periodic renovation of the protective coating.
Maintenance of concrete slabs consists of regular sweeping and removal of dirt and debris. Concrete slabs may be cleaned with water and mild detergents, such as dishwashing liquid diluted at a ratio of 1:30, or with products specifically intended for cleaning concrete and stone, used in accordance with the instructions provided on the packaging. Before application, a test should be carried out on a small and inconspicuous section of the surface. However, this does not guarantee complete removal of the contamination.
Cleaning agents based on acids, strong alkalis, or other chemicals that may react with concrete must not be used. Abrasive pastes, detergents, or scouring materials are also prohibited.
Surface maintenance also includes regular removal of leaves, pine needles, and weeds that may accumulate between the slabs. The surface should be protected against scratches, stains from oil, grease, or tar, as well as other chemical substances, cement-based products, and rust. When using garden furniture, its bases should be protected with soft material to prevent scratching of the slab surfaces. When using concrete slab surfaces, attention should be paid to the type of load applied.
If the use of a pressure washer is necessary, the pressure level should be reduced. Excessive water pressure may wash away the protective impregnation.
During winter, avoid removing snow or ice using sharp tools that may damage the protective coating of the concrete. Salt and de-icing agents must not be used. Their use contributes to changes in the color of the concrete and may cause peeling of the top surface layer.
During installation and renovation works carried out on site, concrete slab surfaces should be protected from dirt and scratches. The slabs should be protected, for example, with foil and adhesive tapes, after first testing the effect of the adhesive on the protective coating in an inconspicuous area. The adhesive from the tape may dissolve the impregnating layer; therefore, the tape should be applied from underneath or, if necessary, from the side of the slab.
The subbase for concrete slabs should be prepared in the same way as for traditional paving blocks. The thickness of the individual layers depends on the stability of the ground. The surface around the house should have load-bearing capacity adapted to the expected loads. The load-bearing capacity depends both on the thickness of the pavement subbase layers and on the thickness of the finishing material used. In the case of a driveway, the subbase should be thicker than for a path. The slabs should be laid with a minimum 4 mm joint spacing.
The natural characteristics of concrete make each panel original and unique. Manual production of panels increases their value and makes each one absolutely unique. Due to the raw nature of the concrete and the composition of the mix, heterogeneous colours - even within one production batch - uneven colour distribution, pores and pits distributed irregularly and of varying intensity and amounts on the surface are a reflection of the nature of the concrete, providing the uniqueness of the product. They do not constitute a defect in the product and cannot be the basis for a complaint. After delivery to the place of assembly, the concrete panels should be unpacked indoors, placed in a vertical position and separated with spacers to allow for an air flow between them.
