Perfectly landscaped garden is a dream of many homeowners. A place where we can quietly spend time after an exhausting day of work, surrounded by nature and soothing greenery often turns out to be very beneficial for our wellbeing. Recently, plant compositions in pots in front of the house are a common trend in the home green surroundings. They complement the decor of any garden design. This solution is very practical and does not impose great requirements on the owner. However, we need to remember a few rules regarding the type of plants that we can plant in concrete pots, as well as how to care for them. If you want to beautify your garden by adding this modern decorative element to it, we will tell you how to do it so that you can enjoy flowers and shrubs in the pots in front of the house for as long as possible.

Concrete pots, due to a wide range of available shapes and dimensions, can blend really well with many plants. However, it is worth remembering that the plants we want to plant in concrete pots must be well adapted to growing in narrow pots.  The amount of sunshine is another very important aspect. It is actually crucial when deciding which plants to place in concrete pots.

Berberries are an example of a shrub that will love a concrete pot. They do not have very high requirements for the environment in which they grow. They do well in sunny places as well as in shade. They are multicoloured plants, which will give your garden an extraordinary charm. Due to their diverse colouring, they look beautiful all year round. The  Bagatelle and Admiration varieties are particularly recommended for concrete pots. Another plant ideally suited to such conditions is a cotoneaster, an evergreen shrub, which also occurs in many colour varieties and can serve as a cover for other plants. Other very popular plants perfectly suited to concrete pots are, for example: dwarf pines, whose distinct advantage is the lack of any requirements for the soil in which it grows, Chinese junipers, which can survive even the most severe droughts, a boxwood, which perfectly exposes the minimalist design of pots, or an ice plant, which perfectly copes with the prolonged drought. If you are wondering what flowers to plant in high pots on the terrace, a fantastic idea will be various coloured grasses or seasonal plants, i.e. fuchsias, geraniums or petunias, which can be planted on their own or used as a complementary accent with other plants.

How to care for compositions in pots in front of the house?

When caring for flowers and shrubs in pots in front of the house, you should remember a few basic rules. Our concrete pots have thermal insulation added at the production stage, thanks to which, the plants will be able to survive the winter without any additional efforts. In the case of pots made by other manufacturers, at the time of planting, it is necessary to cover all walls with polystyrene to protect the roots of plants against temperature changes. Another important thing is to provide plants with adequate drainage made of garden expanded clay aggregate, which will ensure removal of excess water. The drainage layer with a thickness of 3 -10 cm should be additionally protected against clogging with a layer of agrotextile. Finally, we should make sure that the soil is fertile and has appropriate structure. Fertile and permeable soil will provide plants with access to the necessary nutrients and an adequate amount of stored water. To further increase the absorption of the soil, we can use hydrogel or sand and compost. Most plants do best in acidic soil. However, it is recommended to check the requirements of the plants selected by us in this respect and to examine the pH of the soil in which they are planted.

Regular irrigation is an important element of taking care of our plants in pots in front of the house. We can take care of it ourselves, buy pots with an irrigation system or equip them with a drip irrigation system. Adequate fertilisation is also very important. We recommend the use of long-acting fertilizers and following the dosages given in the manual very carefully. If we worry that we may over-fertilise soil, we can apply natural compost that cannot be overdosed.
